Upcoming Author Visit:
Tuesday, March 5th
Book Orders Due February 20th
We're thrilled for this year's author visit with Elise Broach on Tuesday, March 5th. Elise is a NY Times best-selling author of Masterpiece, Shakespeare's Secret, and more, including picture books! This is a wonderful event for the student curriculum as a distinguished author's presentation inspires young readers and writers.
Don't miss out on ordering an autographed book for your child or a friend (makes a great gift). Autographed books will be delivered to students in their classrooms on March 5th.
Reach out to Angela Niznik (email@example.com) with any questions.
Young Writers Is Coming, March 16th!
The Ridgefield Joint Council of PTAs is proud to sponsor the 2019 Young Writers’ Conference for third, fourth and fifth grade students. This celebration of writing gives children an opportunity to use pencil and paper in new and exciting ways, and to broaden their perspective of what can be created with words.

Deadline for enrollment is Friday, February 22.
The BMES PTA Yearbook Committee will be working hard to put together the 2018-2019 Yearbook, which features the friends, fun and experiences your children have had throughout this school year. This is a wonderful keepsake of their days at Barlow Mountain Elementary, and is sure to be a treasure your children will cherish for years to come. As such, we recommend ordering one yearbook PER CHILD.
Yearbooks need to be ordered and paid for months in advance of their distribution, so we encourage you to order them NOW. The books will be distributed via homerooms in June before the last day of school.
5th Grade Parent Circles Starting Up
It won't be long before your child reaches adolescence and enters middle school. This transition encompasses more than a change in schools and increased academic challenge. Adolescence is a time when hormones rage, emotions become more volatile, and children start wanting to do more grown-up things. And today our children are growing up in an environment in which parents have limited control over what their child is exposed to. Needless to say, this can be a challenging time to be a parent. But you are not alone!
For the past ten years, the Ridgefield Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse (RCCASA) has sponsored discussion groups, or Parent Circles, facilitated by an expert in adolescent development, in which you can get information on evidence-based practices and share insights with other parents. Research continues to demonstrate the importance of proactive parenting, and that specific practices, begun early enough, can make a big difference.
Circles are starting up soon!

MONTHLY WARM UP WALK
Barlow Mountain Elementary was awarded a grant for $1,000 by Action For Healthy Kids last Spring. As a condition of the grant, we have implemented a new initiative to encourage students to get active. To that end, Barlow Mountain is hosting a monthly Warm Up walk on the second Wednesday of each month at 8:30am. This is NOT a drop off activity, so parents must walk with their students. We walk around OUTSIDE the school building until it is time to start school. If the weather is not good, we post on the Barlow Facebook page if the activity is cancelled or postponed.
Any additional questions may be directed to Emily Mills at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Calling All Lunch Buddies!
We're looking for parent volunteers to help our KINDERGARTNERS and FIRST GRADERS on the playground and in the cafeteria throughout the entire school year. You will assist the kids as they adapt to the playground, learn how to navigate the lunch line, use their cafe pre-pay numbers and clean up their table.
Volunteers are needed from 12:10 PM – 1:10 PM each day of the week.
You can sign up for the day(s) that work best for you!
